Every dealer who has shipped enough fragile inventory has, at some point, opened a return box to find a beloved piece in several pieces, and the temptation afterward is to blame the carrier. Sometimes that’s fair. More often, honestly, it isn’t. Standard parcel carriers handle millions of packages a day through automated sorting systems that drop, tumble, and stack boxes as a matter of routine, expected operation β not negligence. A box that survives that environment has to be built, deliberately, to survive it. A box that doesn’t is a box that was never really ready to ship in the first place.
The good news is that the packing methods that reliably protect fragile antiques are well understood, not mysterious, and mostly a matter of discipline rather than expensive materials.
Understanding What a Box Actually Experiences in Transit
Before getting to technique, it’s worth being honest about what happens to a parcel between pickup and delivery. Packages are typically handled a dozen or more times β loaded and unloaded from trucks, moved through automated conveyor and sorting systems, stacked under other packages of unknown weight, and occasionally dropped from heights of several feet during manual sorting. This isn’t the exception; it’s the documented, expected baseline of how parcel networks operate.
Packing for this reality means designing for drop impact, compression from stacking, and vibration over distance β not just for careful handling by a single person carrying a box gently from a truck to a doorstep. Once that mental model is in place, the actual methods make much more sense.
The Double-Box Method
The single most effective technique for fragile items, and the one professional fine art and antiques shippers rely on as a default, is double-boxing.
The principle is straightforward: the item is cushioned and boxed as normal in an inner box, and that entire inner box is then placed inside a larger outer box with a substantial cushioning gap β commonly two to four inches on all sides β filled with additional cushioning material. This creates two independent layers of shock absorption rather than one, and critically, it means the inner box (and the item inside it) is never in direct contact with the outer box’s walls, where most impact energy is transferred.
A properly executed double-box:
- Wrap the item itself appropriately for its material (detailed below), and place it in a snug inner box with cushioning filling any remaining void β nothing should shift when the inner box is shaken gently.
- Center the sealed inner box inside a larger outer box, using a cushioning layer on the bottom of the outer box before placing the inner box in.
- Fill the entire gap between inner and outer box β sides, top, and bottom β with cushioning material, checking that the inner box cannot be felt moving or shifting when the sealed outer box is tilted or gently shaken.
- Seal with proper packing tape in an H-pattern across all seams of the outer box, not just running tape along the center seam.
This method roughly doubles material cost and box size compared to single-boxing, and it is, without close competition, the single highest-leverage thing a dealer can do to reduce transit damage on genuinely fragile items.
Choosing the Right Cushioning Material for the Job
Not all cushioning materials behave the same way, and matching material to item type matters more than simply using “enough” of whatever is on hand.
- Dielectric (anti-static, typically pink or perforated) foam sheeting, cut and wrapped around the item before boxing, is the standard first layer of protection for ceramics, glass, and other rigid fragile items. Its cell structure absorbs impact energy effectively and doesn’t leave residue or reactive chemicals against surfaces, unlike some packing materials.
- Bubble wrap, used generously and layered β typically several wraps for genuinely fragile items β remains a reliable general-purpose cushioning layer, particularly effective when wrapped so that the bubbles face inward against the item, maximizing surface contact and cushioning at the points most likely to experience impact.
- Packing peanuts work well as void-fill in the outer gap of a double-boxed shipment but are a poor primary cushioning layer directly against a fragile item, since they can shift and allow point-contact impact even when a box appears full.
- Foam-in-place or custom-cut foam inserts, while more expensive and typically reserved for higher-value or repeat shipments, provide the most reliable and consistent protection because the item is held in a fixed position with no ability to shift at all β the gold standard for genuinely irreplaceable pieces shipped regularly.
- Acid-free tissue paper, used as a first, direct-contact layer against painted, gilded, or delicate surfaces before any foam or bubble wrap goes on, prevents surface abrasion from the cushioning material itself, which is a real and underappreciated cause of damage.
“People assume more bubble wrap always means safer. It doesn’t, if the piece can still shift inside all that wrap. The test I use every time: shake the sealed inner box gently against my ear. If I hear or feel anything move, it’s not ready.”
Material-Specific Packing Notes
Different categories of fragile antiques fail in different ways, and packing technique should reflect that.
Ceramics and pottery. Wrap in acid-free tissue first, then dielectric foam or bubble wrap, paying particular attention to handles, spouts, and any protruding elements, which should receive extra cushioning since they concentrate impact force in a way flat body surfaces don’t. Hollow pieces can benefit from lightly filling the interior cavity with crumpled acid-free tissue to prevent the piece from flexing or cracking under compression.
Glass. Glass is particularly vulnerable to vibration-induced stress fractures that may not be visible until the piece is handled again, so wrap thoroughly and avoid any point contact against hard surfaces. Stemware and anything with a narrow, structurally weak point (a stem, a thin neck) should have that specific area individually reinforced with additional wrapping beyond the general cushioning.
Furniture. Remove or immobilize any moving parts β drawers, doors, detachable legs β packing them separately, since unsecured movement inside a piece during transit is a leading cause of damage to joinery and finish alike. Corner protectors on all edges, furniture blankets or padding wrap around the full piece, and for genuinely valuable or oversized furniture, a custom wood crate rather than cardboard is generally worth the additional cost.
Mirrors and framed items. Cardboard corner protectors on all four corners, glass-specific tape applied in an X pattern across the glass surface (which doesn’t prevent breakage but does control shattering and reduces secondary damage from loose shards), and shipment on edge rather than flat whenever the outer packaging allows, since flat-packed glass items are more vulnerable to a direct top-down impact from stacked packages.
Clocks and mechanical items. Immobilize the pendulum and any moving internal mechanisms before shipping β a common and entirely preventable cause of internal damage β and pack the case with the same care as any fine furniture piece, since cases are frequently as fragile as the mechanisms they house.
Crating for High-Value or Oversized Pieces
For pieces above a dealer’s personal threshold for acceptable risk β commonly set somewhere in the low thousands of dollars in value, or simply anything irreplaceable regardless of price β custom wood crating built by a specialized fine art and antiques shipper is worth the added cost. A proper crate:
- Suspends or firmly braces the item so it cannot shift or contact the crate walls directly.
- Uses a foam or cushioned interior lining rather than relying on the rigidity of the wood alone.
- Is built to the specific dimensions and weight of the piece, rather than a generic size.
- Often includes a tilt or shock indicator on the outside, which, while not preventing damage, provides useful documentation if a claim becomes necessary.
Custom crating costs meaningfully more than double-boxing but is standard practice among specialized shippers for a reason β for a sufficiently valuable or fragile piece, it is the only method that reliably eliminates the specific failure modes cardboard boxing cannot fully address.
Documentation Before the Box Is Sealed
A step many dealers skip, and later regret, is photographing the item and its packing process immediately before sealing the final box β the item itself showing its pre-shipment condition, the cushioning layers as they go in, and the sealed box ready for pickup. This documentation does two things: it provides a clear condition baseline if a damage claim becomes necessary, and it protects the dealer against any dispute about whether the item was adequately packed in the first place, which is a factor carriers and insurers frequently weigh when evaluating a damage claim.
Building Packing Into the Cost of Doing Business
Proper packing materials and the time they take are a real cost, and it’s tempting, especially on lower-value pieces, to cut corners. But the actual cost comparison isn’t packing materials versus no packing materials β it’s packing materials versus the much larger cost of a damaged item, a refund, a damaged reputation, and in many cases a shipping claim that takes weeks to resolve and rarely reimburses the item’s full value even when successful.
Building the true cost of proper packing β double-boxing materials, appropriate cushioning, and the time to do it correctly β into pricing for shipped items, rather than treating it as an afterthought absorbed out of margin, is what allows a dealer to ship fragile antiques confidently and consistently, rather than treating every shipment as a small gamble.
