Ceramics reward close looking more than almost any other antiques category, because so much of what determines age, origin, and quality is written directly into the object’s physical surface and structure. Unlike furniture, where you often need to open a drawer to find the diagnostic evidence, ceramics tend to show their history in plain sight — in the color and texture of the exposed clay body at the foot rim, in the way a glaze pools and crazes, in the particular sheen or dullness that different firing temperatures produce. The trouble is that this evidence only speaks to you if you know its language.
This guide breaks ceramics vocabulary into four connected ideas: the clay body, the glaze applied over it, the firing process that transforms both, and the forming method that shaped the piece in the first place. Together, they explain nearly everything a collector needs to evaluate a piece of pottery or porcelain with real confidence.
Starting With the Body
The “body” is simply the fired clay itself, independent of any glaze or decoration — and it’s the single most fundamental classification in ceramics, because it determines everything else about how a piece was made and how it performs.
Earthenware is clay fired at relatively low temperatures, typically in the range of roughly 1,000 to 1,150 degrees Celsius. It remains porous after firing unless glazed, tends to be heavier and less refined than stoneware or porcelain, and is usually opaque and often somewhat coarse in texture when you examine an unglazed area. Most everyday utilitarian pottery throughout history — and a great deal of decorative English and European tin-glazed ware — is earthenware.
Stoneware is fired at higher temperatures, generally around 1,200 to 1,300 degrees Celsius, which causes the clay body to vitrify, or partially fuse into a glass-like, non-porous state, even without glaze. Stoneware is naturally strong, chip-resistant relative to earthenware, and often has a warm grey, buff, or brown tone where the body is left exposed.
Porcelain is fired hottest of all, often above 1,300 degrees Celsius, using clay bodies rich in kaolin. The result is fully vitrified, typically white, and — critically — translucent when held to strong light in thin sections, a test collectors still use today. True hard-paste porcelain was a closely guarded technical achievement in Europe, first mastered at Meissen in the early 18th century after Chinese and later Japanese makers had produced it for centuries.
Hold a piece up to a bright window. If light passes through the thinnest section with a faint glow, you’re very likely looking at genuine porcelain rather than a fine earthenware imitation.
A few related terms worth knowing:
- Soft-paste porcelain — an artificial, lower-firing substitute for true hard-paste porcelain, developed in Europe before the genuine Chinese-style formula was cracked; softer, more prone to chipping, and identifiable partly by its different glaze texture.
- Bone china — an English variation on porcelain that incorporates calcined animal bone ash into the body, producing exceptional whiteness and strength at a lower firing temperature than true hard-paste porcelain.
- Biscuit (or bisque) — the state of a ceramic body after its first firing but before glazing, left matte and porous; some decorative figures were left permanently in this state for a soft, unglazed finish.
Understanding Glaze
If the body is the ceramic’s skeleton, the glaze is its skin — a glass-forming layer of minerals applied before a firing (or a separate glaze firing) that melts and fuses to the surface, providing both decoration and, on porous bodies especially, waterproofing.
Glaze types worth recognizing:
- Lead glaze — a historically common, low-firing glaze giving a warm, glossy, slightly yellow-tinted surface; associated with much traditional English and American earthenware, and now understood to carry toxicity risks that make period lead-glazed pieces unsuitable for food use.
- Tin glaze — an opaque white glaze achieved by adding tin oxide, historically used as a canvas for painted decoration on earthenware; the basis of maiolica, delftware, and faience traditions across Europe.
- Salt glaze — produced by introducing salt into the kiln during firing at high heat, where it vaporizes and reacts with the clay surface to form a distinctive glaze with a texture often compared to orange peel; strongly associated with stoneware.
- Celadon — an East Asian glaze family prized for its subtle blue-green to grey-green tones, achieved through careful control of iron oxide content and kiln atmosphere.
- Crystalline glaze — a glaze formulated and fired to encourage visible mineral crystals to grow within it during cooling, producing striking, often snowflake-like surface patterns.
Glaze condition terms carry real weight in valuation:
- Crazing — the fine network of surface cracks that develops in a glaze, either as a natural sign of age from the differing expansion rates of glaze and body over time, or occasionally as an original manufacturing characteristic; context and pattern matter enormously in telling the two apart.
- Pooling — the visible thickening of glaze where it has run and gathered, typically in crevices or at the base of a piece during firing, and often a genuinely useful clue for identifying a specific glaze recipe or workshop.
- Glaze skips — small unglazed patches where the glaze failed to adhere or was deliberately left bare, sometimes intentional (as with certain Asian stoneware traditions) and sometimes simply a firing flaw.
- Crawling — a glaze defect where the glaze pulls away from the body during firing, leaving bare patches with rolled, bead-like glaze edges around them.
The Firing Process Itself
Firing is the transformation event in ceramics — the point where soft, workable clay becomes a permanent, durable material — and understanding its stages clarifies a lot of terminology you’ll encounter in listings and reference books.
Most traditional ceramic production involves at least two firings. The bisque firing (or biscuit firing) is the first pass, hardening the raw clay body into a stable, though still porous, state without any glaze present. The piece is then dipped, poured, brushed, or sprayed with glaze material and returned to the kiln for a glaze firing, typically at a higher temperature than the bisque firing, which melts the glaze into its final glassy surface and, in many traditions, simultaneously matures the body to full density.
Kiln atmosphere is another variable collectors should understand at a basic level. An oxidation firing, with ample oxygen present in the kiln, tends to produce brighter, more predictable glaze colors. A reduction firing, where oxygen is deliberately restricted, forces different chemical reactions in certain glaze minerals — iron-based glazes, for instance, can shift dramatically toward green or red depending on the reduction atmosphere — and is responsible for some of the most prized and difficult-to-control historical glaze effects, celadon among them.
Overglaze versus underglaze decoration is a distinction worth memorizing, because it directly affects durability and, often, value. Underglaze decoration is painted onto the bisque-fired body before the glaze is applied, so the glaze covers and protects the painted design permanently. Overglaze (or enamel) decoration is applied on top of an already-glazed and fired surface, then fixed with an additional lower-temperature firing — a technique that allows for a wider color palette but leaves the decoration more vulnerable to wear over time, since it sits above rather than beneath the protective glaze layer.
Form: How the Piece Was Actually Made
The final piece of the puzzle is forming method — how the clay was shaped before firing — and it’s often visible if you know exactly where to look.
Throwing refers to shaping clay on a rotating potter’s wheel. Thrown pieces typically show subtle horizontal ridging on the interior or exterior, a rounded, symmetrical profile, and sometimes fine spiral marks from the throwing process, especially near the base. A trimmed foot ring — where excess clay was shaved away from the base once the piece had firmed up — is a classic sign of wheel-thrown work.
Casting (specifically slip casting) involves pouring liquid clay, called slip, into a plaster mold, letting a shell of clay build up against the mold’s interior surface, then pouring out the excess liquid slip before the piece is removed to dry and fire. Cast pieces can achieve complex, non-symmetrical, or highly detailed forms impossible on a wheel, but often show a faint mold seam line, which was traditionally smoothed away by hand but can sometimes still be detected on close inspection.
Press molding shapes soft, plastic clay by pressing it into or over a rigid mold by hand, used historically for relief-decorated tiles, figural elements, and some tableware components before being joined to other thrown or cast parts.
A few related form-adjacent terms:
- Sprigging — applying separately molded relief decoration onto the surface of a piece before firing, common on stoneware and some fine earthenware.
- Foot ring — the raised ring of clay left on the underside of a vessel, formed either by trimming on a wheel or built into a mold, on which the piece actually rests.
- Marks — impressed, painted, or printed maker’s or factory identifications, usually found on the base, whose style, wording, and placement can help date and attribute a piece with real precision when cross-referenced against known mark histories.
Bringing the Vocabulary Together
The real value of this terminology shows up when you stop thinking of it as separate categories and start reading a piece as one connected story. A heavy, opaque body with a warm lead glaze and hand-thrown ridging tells a coherent tale of traditional low-fired earthenware production. A translucent, pure-white body with a crisp, glassy glaze and a faint mold seam tells an entirely different one, of high-fired porcelain shaped by casting. Neither story is inherently better — but a piece whose body, glaze, and form don’t logically agree with each other, or with the age and origin claimed for it, deserves a closer look before you buy.
Next time you pick up a piece of pottery or porcelain, run through the sequence deliberately: body, glaze, firing evidence, form. In a few minutes of careful observation, you’ll have gathered more genuine information about that object’s history than most casual buyers manage in a lifetime of admiring it from across the room.
