Open a drawer at an antique shop, pull it all the way out, and turn it upside down. That five-second inspection tells an experienced dealer more about a piece of furniture than the finish, the hardware, or even the wood species. Joinery is furniture’s skeleton, and unlike a coat of paint or a set of replacement handles, it’s remarkably difficult to fake convincingly. Learning to read it is one of the single highest-value skills a collector can develop.

Why Joinery Matters More Than Almost Anything Else

Surfaces lie. A skilled restorer can refinish a piece so thoroughly that its true age becomes nearly impossible to judge from the outside. Hardware gets swapped constantly — a Victorian dresser might carry replacement pulls from three different decades by the time it reaches you. But the internal structure of a piece, the actual joints holding rails to legs and drawer sides to fronts, was built once, by hand or by machine, at a specific point in the piece’s history, and it very rarely gets rebuilt afterward unless there’s been serious damage.

This is why any serious furniture inspection starts with the joints, not the surface. A drawer, in particular, functions almost like a fingerprint. Because drawers see more friction and stress than almost any other component, makers historically invested real skill in joining them securely — which means the drawer is usually where you’ll find the clearest, most diagnostic joinery in the entire piece.

The wood may have been refinished a dozen times over two centuries. The joints, in nearly every case, have not.

The Dovetail: Furniture’s Most Famous Joint

The dovetail joint interlocks trapezoidal “pins” and “tails” cut from the ends of two boards, creating a mechanical connection so strong it resists being pulled apart along the grain — precisely the stress a drawer front experiences every time it’s opened. You’ll find dovetails almost everywhere case furniture needs a strong right-angle joint: drawer corners above all, but also carcass corners on chests and blanket boxes.

What makes dovetails such a useful dating tool is the difference between hand-cut and machine-cut execution.

  • Hand-cut dovetails are irregular. Look closely and you’ll see pins of slightly varying width, spacing that isn’t perfectly even, and often faint saw or chisel marks inside the joint. This irregularity isn’t a flaw — it’s the signature of a craftsperson working freehand, and it generally indicates construction before the widespread adoption of dovetailing machinery in the later 19th century.
  • Machine-cut dovetails are uniform to a degree no hand ever achieves — evenly spaced, identically sized, often rounded rather than flat-bottomed depending on the cutter used. Their appearance became common from the 1870s onward and near-universal in mass-produced furniture by the early 20th century.

A useful rule of thumb: count the pins. Earlier hand-cut work often uses fewer, larger dovetails, sometimes just two or three per joint, while later machine work tends toward a higher number of smaller, more closely spaced pins. This isn’t an absolute law — regional traditions and individual makers varied — but it’s a reliable starting signal, and combined with wood species, wear patterns, and construction style, it builds a convincing overall picture.

Mortise-and-Tenon: The Backbone of Frame Construction

Where dovetails dominate box construction, the mortise-and-tenon joint dominates frames — chairs, tables, bed frames, anywhere a vertical member (a leg) needs to meet a horizontal one (a rail or stretcher) at a strong right angle. A tenon is a projecting tongue cut into the end of one piece; a mortise is the matching rectangular cavity cut into the other. The tenon slides into the mortise and, historically, was secured with glue, a wooden peg, or both.

This joint has been essentially unchanged for millennia because it’s mechanically ideal for the stress a chair or table frame experiences: constant racking and twisting forces that a simple butt joint or dowel joint handles poorly by comparison. When you’re evaluating a chair, gently test for looseness at the leg-to-seat-rail junctions. Some play is normal in a genuinely old piece and can often be corrected by a competent restorer; excessive looseness, splitting around the joint, or visible modern glue squeeze-out are all worth flagging.

Pegged mortise-and-tenon joints — where a wooden peg is driven through both the tenon and the surrounding mortise wall to lock the joint permanently — are especially associated with earlier and more rural furniture traditions, where reliability mattered more than the ability to disassemble a piece for repair. Seeing round peg ends on the outside face of a chair or table leg is a good prompt to look more closely at the piece’s overall construction vocabulary.

Dowel Joints: A Useful but Different Story

A dowel joint uses one or more round wooden pegs, glued into matching drilled holes in each of the two members being joined, to align and reinforce the connection. Dowels are faster to produce than dovetails or mortise-and-tenon joints and require far less hand skill, which is exactly why their prevalence increased steadily through the 19th and 20th centuries as furniture production industrialized.

This doesn’t make dowel construction inherently “bad” — plenty of well-made furniture, including good quality mid-20th-century pieces, relies on dowels intelligently. But when you find dowel joints used in a context where dovetails or mortise-and-tenon would traditionally be expected — say, a drawer claiming to be 18th century but assembled with visible dowel pins rather than dovetails — that’s a meaningful red flag worth investigating further, either signaling a later production date than claimed or a repair/rebuild at some point in the piece’s life.

Finger Joints and Their Lesser-Known Cousins

The finger joint (sometimes called a box joint) resembles a simplified dovetail: interlocking rectangular “fingers” rather than angled pins and tails. Because the fingers are cut straight rather than at an angle, the joint has less inherent mechanical resistance to being pulled apart along the joining direction — dovetails’ angled shape is precisely what gives them their pull-out resistance. Finger joints appear more often in secondary or utilitarian furniture, and their prevalence in a piece is worth weighing alongside everything else you observe.

A few other joints worth recognizing:

  1. Rabbet joint — one board’s edge is recessed to receive the edge of another, commonly used for backs and bottoms of case pieces rather than structural corners.
  2. Half-lap joint — two members are notched so they overlap flush, often used where two rails cross.
  3. Butt joint — the simplest possible joint, two flat surfaces glued or nailed together with no interlocking geometry at all; structurally the weakest of the common joints and a signal to look for additional reinforcement like corner blocks.

Reading Wear Alongside Construction

Joinery only tells half the story without wear analysis, and the two together are far more convincing than either alone. Genuine age leaves consistent, logically placed wear: shrinkage gaps where a tenon has pulled slightly from its mortise after generations of seasonal humidity change, oxidation darkening inside a drawer where a hand-cut dovetail joint has been exposed to air for a century, tool marks that follow a plausible hand motion rather than a perfectly repeating mechanical pattern.

Watch for construction and wear that don’t agree with each other. A drawer with confidently machine-cut, perfectly uniform dovetails but a heavily distressed, “aged” painted finish is telling you two different stories about its history, and one of them is probably fiction. Genuine pieces are consistent: the joinery, the wear, the materials, and the overall proportions all point toward the same period.

Putting This Into Practice at the Next Sale

Next time you’re at a shop or estate sale, make joinery inspection your habit rather than an afterthought:

  • Pull every drawer fully out and examine the corner joints in daylight, not under a shop’s dim ambient lighting.
  • Check chair and table leg junctions for pegged versus glue-only mortise-and-tenon construction.
  • Look at the underside of a tabletop or the back of a case piece — these unseen surfaces are rarely refinished and often preserve the clearest evidence of original construction.
  • Compare joinery style against the seller’s stated period. Confident sellers who know their stock will welcome the question; vague or evasive answers are informative in their own right.

None of this requires specialized tools — just patience and a willingness to look past the finish. Once reading joints becomes second nature, you’ll find that the furniture itself starts doing most of the talking, well before you ever need to check a hallmark or ask the dealer a single question.
