A single misread hallmark can turn a modest plated bowl into a supposed sterling treasure in a seller’s imagination, and a collector who cannot distinguish repoussé from cast decoration will consistently overpay for later, mass-produced work dressed up to look hand-finished. Silver and metalware terminology exists because the techniques it describes carry real, measurable consequences for both authenticity and value. Solid Silver Versus Plate: The Distinction That Matters Most
Sterling silver refers to an alloy that is 92.5% pure silver, with the remainder typically copper for added strength — pure silver alone is too soft for practical objects. In the United States and Britain, sterling is almost always marked, either with the word “sterling,” a numeric fineness mark (925), or a hallmark system specific to the country of origin.
Coin silver, an American term, refers to silver alloyed closer to 90% purity, historically melted down from coinage before a national sterling standard was widely adopted; coin silver pieces predate roughly the 1860s in most American contexts and are marked differently from later sterling.
Electroplate (often marked EP, EPNS for electroplated nickel silver, or simply “plate”) describes objects with a thin layer of silver deposited electrolytically onto a base metal, a process commercialized by Elkington & Co. beginning in the 1840s. Electroplate is not silver in the metallurgical sense at all — it is base metal wearing a silver coat, and that coat wears through with use, particularly at high points and edges, revealing the yellowish or grayish base metal beneath.
Sheffield plate, an earlier and distinct technology predating electroplating, was made by fusing a sheet of silver to a copper ingot under heat and pressure, then rolling the combined sheet to the desired thickness — the silver and copper are mechanically bonded rather than electrolytically deposited. Sheffield plate, produced roughly from the 1740s through the mid-nineteenth century, wears differently than electroplate: because the silver layer was applied before fabrication, wear often reveals “bleeding” — a pink copper blush along edges and high points — that is itself considered a charming, period-appropriate sign of age by many collectors rather than a flaw.
Learn to feel for weight and temperature as much as look for marks. Sterling has a density and a particular cool, dense heft that plated wares — built on lighter base metals — rarely fully replicate.
Hallmarks: Reading the Silver’s Own Signature
British silver hallmarking is arguably the most rigorous and information-dense marking system applied to any antiques category, and learning to read it transforms guesswork into documented fact.
- Maker’s mark — Initials or a symbol identifying the silversmith or manufacturing firm, registered with the relevant assay office.
- Standard mark — Indicates the silver fineness, most commonly the lion passant for sterling silver made in England.
- Assay office mark — A symbol identifying the specific city where the piece was tested and marked: an anchor for Birmingham, a crown or rose for Sheffield historically, a leopard’s head for London, among others.
- Date letter — A single letter, cycling through the alphabet in a specific typeface and shield shape that changes each cycle, allowing a piece to be dated to the exact year it was assayed.
- Duty mark — A monarch’s head used between 1784 and 1890 in Britain to indicate that tax had been paid on the piece, itself a useful dating aid for pieces from that window.
American silver marking is far less standardized than British hallmarking and relies more heavily on maker’s marks tied to known manufacturers — Gorham, Tiffany & Co., and Reed & Barton among the most collected — cross-referenced against published mark directories, since there was no equivalent centralized assay system.
Decoration Techniques: How the Surface Was Made
Understanding how silver was ornamented is often the single best way to judge quality and authenticity, because hand techniques and cast or stamped imitations look convincingly similar in photographs but feel entirely different in hand.
Repoussé is a technique in which a metal sheet is hammered from the reverse side to create a raised, three-dimensional design on the front. It is entirely hand-worked, requiring the piece to be worked against pitch or another yielding backing material, and results in a design that shows corresponding depressions on the underside — a detail worth checking, since a piece claiming hand-repoussé decoration but showing a flat, undisturbed reverse is very likely cast or stamped instead.
Chasing refers to refining and detailing a design from the front of the metal, typically used to sharpen and finish repoussé work by adding fine lines, texture, and crisp edges that hammering from behind cannot achieve alone. Repoussé and chasing are usually used together, described jointly as “repoussé and chased” in quality catalog descriptions.
Engraving cuts a design directly into the metal surface using a sharp tool called a burin, removing metal to create the line rather than displacing it, as chasing does. Engraved monograms, crests, and presentation inscriptions are extremely common on antique silver and, when original to the piece and datable, can add both historical interest and provenance value.
Bright-cut engraving, a refinement of plain engraving popular in the late eighteenth century, uses angled cuts that catch light and sparkle, distinguishable from flat engraving by its faceted, glittering quality under raking light.
Cast decoration involves pouring molten metal into a mold to form a design, then applying or soldering the cast element onto the main body. Cast ornament tends to show slightly softer, less crisp detail than chased work, along with visible seams where cast elements were joined to the body — both useful tells when a seller claims hand-chasing that is actually mass-produced casting.
Flat-chasing describes a lower-relief version of chasing worked without significant hammering from the reverse, producing texture and pattern that stays close to the metal surface rather than standing proud of it — common on later, more economically produced Victorian pieces trying to evoke the look of true repoussé at lower cost.
Form and Function Vocabulary
Certain terms describe specific silver forms so consistently that fluency with them speeds up both research and communication with dealers.
- Salver — A flat serving tray, usually raised on a low foot or feet, used for presenting food, drink, or calling cards.
- Épergne — An elaborate, often multi-tiered centerpiece with branching arms for holding fruit, flowers, or sweetmeats, a showpiece of formal Georgian and Victorian dining.
- Chafing dish — A vessel, often silver-plated, designed to keep food warm at the table via an integrated heat source beneath the serving bowl.

Base Metals and Alternatives Worth Recognizing
Not every attractive antique metal object aspires to be silver, and recognizing alternative base metals prevents both overpaying and underappreciating.
Pewter is a tin-based alloy, historically combined with varying amounts of lead, copper, or antimony; older pewter (particularly pre-1750, when lead content was higher) has a distinctive soft gray patina and should be handled and cleaned carefully given historical lead content concerns. Britannia metal, a harder, lead-free tin alloy developed in the late eighteenth century specifically as a base for electroplating, largely replaced traditional pewter for quality tableware and is frequently the base metal beneath EPBM-marked (electroplated Britannia metal) Victorian silverware. Ormolu, though more closely associated with furniture mounts and clock cases than tableware, refers to gilded bronze or brass, historically fire-gilded with a mercury-gold amalgam — a technique so hazardous to the workers involved that it was eventually banned in most of Europe, making genuine antique ormolu a technique that effectively cannot be authentically replicated today using the original process.
Surface Finishes and Inlay Techniques
Beyond repoussé and engraving, several other decorative processes turn up often enough in silver and metalware descriptions to merit attention. Niello is a black metallic alloy, typically a mixture of sulfur with silver, copper, and lead, applied into engraved recesses and fused with heat to create a striking dark-on-bright contrast pattern — long associated with Russian and Persian silverwork, though the technique has ancient origins. Damascening describes inlaying precious metal, usually gold or silver wire, into a base metal surface (often steel or iron) that has been prepared with fine crosshatched grooves to hold it — the technique takes its name from Damascus, though it was practiced widely across the Islamic world, Japan, and eventually Europe. Parcel-gilt refers to a piece that is only partially gilded, typically silver with select areas — the interior of a cup, decorative borders — finished in gold while the rest remains plain silver, a deliberate and often costly design choice rather than an accident of wear. Patina, Wear, and Condition Vocabulary
Silver develops its own condition language that experienced buyers learn to read as carefully as they read hallmarks. Patina describes the soft, slightly toned surface silver develops with age and gentle handling — a quality collectors generally prize and conservators are careful not to strip away through overly aggressive polishing. Bright-cut wear and monogram removal are both condition concerns worth checking for: a crest or monogram that has been erased leaves a telltale thin, slightly concave patch where metal was removed, sometimes distorting the surrounding decoration. Firestain, a grayish discoloration that can appear on sterling silver during manufacture when copper in the alloy oxidizes beneath the surface during heating, is a manufacturing artifact rather than damage, though it can be difficult to polish out entirely. Gauge refers to the thickness of the silver sheet used to construct a piece — heavier-gauge silver holds its shape better, resists denting, and generally commands a premium over thin, lightweight work, which is one more reason experienced buyers pick up and heft a piece rather than relying on photographs alone.

Pick up a piece, check its weight against expectation, examine the reverse of any raised decoration for corresponding depressions, and read the hallmarks letter by letter against a reference guide before trusting a catalog description. Silver rewards this kind of close, patient looking more generously than almost any other collecting category, because its marks and techniques were, by design, meant to be legible to anyone who took the trouble to learn the language.
