Understanding what you’re actually up against, and adopting the inspection habits that catch infestations early, is the difference between a minor, containable problem and the kind of loss that can render an antique effectively worthless.

The Two Enemies: Clothes Moths and Wood-Boring Beetles

Two broad categories of pest cause the overwhelming majority of damage to antique collections, and they attack fundamentally different materials with different biology, which means they require different detection strategies and different responses.

Webbing clothes moths (and their close relative, casemaking clothes moths) don’t actually eat fabric in their adult, flying form β€” the visible moth is largely harmless and doesn’t feed at all. The damage comes entirely from the larval stage, tiny caterpillars that feed on keratin, the protein found in wool, fur, feathers, silk, and other animal-derived fibers. This technique generally requires conservation expertise and equipment beyond what most home collectors have access to, making it more common in institutional and professional treatment settings.

Neither freezing nor anoxic treatment is appropriate for every material β€” some composite objects, certain painted or lacquered surfaces, and items with existing structural instability may respond poorly to temperature or humidity changes involved in the process. When in doubt about a valuable or fragile piece, a conservator’s assessment before treatment is worth the consultation fee.

Upholstered Furniture: A Category of Its Own

Upholstered antiques deserve special attention because they combine both categories of risk in a single object β€” a wood frame vulnerable to boring beetles and animal-fiber stuffing, webbing, and show fabric vulnerable to clothes moths, all wrapped together in a construction that makes thorough inspection genuinely difficult. Periodically turning an upholstered piece over and inspecting the underside β€” the dust cover, the exposed frame, any areas where fabric has separated from the frame β€” is worth building into a regular routine, particularly for pieces that sit in low-traffic rooms and go months without being moved or cleaned.
