Buyers new to mechanical watches are often surprised to learn what a proper vintage watch service actually involves, and even more surprised by what it costs. A quote of several hundred dollars to service a watch that might itself be worth a few thousand can feel disproportionate until you understand that the watchmaker is not cleaning a surface β€” they are taking apart a machine with dozens of tiny interdependent parts, restoring each one to working tolerance, and reassembling the whole thing by hand under magnification. Walking through what actually happens on the bench explains both the cost and why skipping service on a decades-old movement is a genuine mechanical risk, not just a cosmetic shortcut.

Why Old Lubricants Fail

Every mechanical watch movement depends on lubrication at dozens of specific friction points β€” the pivots where gear wheels rotate, the mainspring barrel, the escapement, the keyless works that operate winding and time-setting. Watchmakers use different oils and greases calibrated for different loads and speeds at each point, applied in microscopic quantities that would be invisible without magnification.

Over years and decades, those oils degrade. They oxidize, thicken, and eventually dry out or turn gummy, and as they do, they stop reducing friction and start increasing it β€” old, degraded lubricant is often worse than no lubricant at all, because it becomes an abrasive sludge that accelerates wear on the very surfaces it was meant to protect. A proper vintage watch service begins with complete disassembly of the movement, not a partial cleaning around what is accessible. Every component β€” mainspring, gear train wheels, escapement parts, balance wheel and hairspring assembly, keyless works, and the plates and bridges that hold everything in position β€” is removed individually and laid out in careful order, often photographed or diagrammed as it comes apart so it can be reassembled correctly, particularly on movements the watchmaker has not serviced before.

Each part is then run through an ultrasonic cleaning process using specialized watch cleaning solutions, which removes old lubricant residue, dust, and grime from every surface, including the fine internal geometry of jewel bearings that hand cleaning could never reach. Parts are inspected individually afterward, under magnification, for wear, cracks, chips, or bent components β€” a bent pivot or a chipped jewel that would be invisible on a running watch becomes obvious once the part is isolated and examined alone.

Rebuilding and Lubricating

Reassembly reverses the disassembly process, but with a critical addition at every stage: fresh, correctly specified lubricant applied in precise, minute quantities at each friction point, using the specific oil or grease appropriate to that point’s load and speed characteristics. Modern synthetic watch oils are formulated to resist the oxidation and thickening that degraded the original lubricant, which is part of why a well-serviced vintage watch can run reliably again for years before its next service is due.

The mainspring β€” the coiled metal spring that stores the energy driving the entire movement β€” is inspected for set (permanent deformation that reduces its power reserve) and replaced if it shows excessive weakness, cracking, or has lost its proper tension; a tired mainspring is a common, straightforward cause of a vintage watch that runs but stops keeping reliable time or has a noticeably short power reserve compared to its original specification.

Timing and Regulation

Once reassembled, a serviced movement is placed on a timing machine, an instrument that listens to the escapement’s ticking through a microphone and translates the pattern into a visual and numerical readout of the watch’s accuracy, beat rate, and beat error β€” a measure of how evenly the two halves of each tick-tock cycle are spaced. The watchmaker adjusts the regulator, and in higher-grade movements the balance wheel’s poise and the hairspring’s shape, to bring the watch as close as reasonably achievable to accurate timekeeping across a full wind, and ideally checks performance across multiple positions, since gravity affects a mechanical escapement’s rate differently depending on whether the watch is lying flat, standing on its edge, or in other orientations.

Vintage movements, even after excellent service, generally cannot match the timing precision of a modern watch fitted with contemporary alloys and manufacturing tolerances, and setting realistic expectations here matters: a beautifully serviced 1940s movement running within a minute or so per day is a genuinely good result for its era and design, not a sign of an incomplete service.

Water Resistance and Gaskets

Case-back gaskets, crystal gaskets, and crown gaskets β€” the rubber or synthetic seals that keep moisture out of a case β€” degrade with age regardless of whether the watch has been worn, and a service typically includes replacing these wear parts. Even so, most vintage watches were never designed to modern water resistance standards, and a service does not restore genuine water resistance to a design that never had much to begin with; a watchmaker who tests a vintage case for water resistance after a service is checking for a meaningful improvement over a leaking case, not certifying the watch safe for swimming.

What Service Does Not Fix

A full service addresses mechanical function, not cosmetic history, and a good watchmaker draws that line deliberately rather than blurring it. Service does not, and should not, include:

  • Refinishing an original dial, which is a separate cosmetic decision with real consequences for collector value, best made deliberately and disclosed rather than done automatically during service
  • Polishing the case, which removes original finish and metal and should be requested specifically, if at all, rather than assumed as part of a routine service
  • Replacing a period-correct crystal with a modern substitute unless the original is cracked or missing, in which case a like-for-like replacement is preferable to an anachronistic upgrade

How Automatic and Manual Movements Differ in Service

The two dominant winding systems found in vintage wristwatches, and occasionally in later pocket watches, place somewhat different demands on a service. Manual-wind movements are mechanically simpler, with fewer total components and no rotor assembly to account for, and are generally more straightforward and marginally less costly to service as a result. Automatic movements add a rotor β€” the semicircular weight that swings with wrist motion to wind the mainspring via an additional gear train β€” along with the bearings and reversing mechanism that let the rotor wind the spring regardless of which direction it swings; every one of those additional parts needs its own inspection, cleaning, and lubrication, and a worn or noisy rotor bearing is a common, specific fault a watchmaker checks for during an automatic movement’s service that simply has no equivalent in a manual-wind caliber.

Chronograph movements, whether manual or automatic, add yet another layer of complexity, since the stopwatch mechanism introduces additional levers, cams, and a separate spring system that must be cleaned, lubricated, and precisely adjusted so that the chronograph’s start, stop, and reset functions engage and disengage cleanly without catching or skipping β€” a meaningfully more involved and typically more expensive service than a simple time-only movement requires, and one best entrusted to a watchmaker with specific chronograph experience rather than a general vintage-watch generalist.

A Practical Checklist Before Choosing a Watchmaker

  • Ask specifically whether the service includes full disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning, and fresh lubrication, or only a partial clean-and-oil
  • Confirm the watchmaker has experience with vintage movements specifically, since techniques and available parts differ meaningfully from modern watch service
  • Ask what happens if a part is found broken during disassembly β€” whether they source vintage replacement parts, fabricate a component, or will contact you before proceeding
  • Request a written timing report showing rate and beat error after service, as a baseline record for future reference
  • Clarify explicitly that cosmetic work β€” dial refinishing, case polishing β€” will not be performed without separate authorization

The Long-Term Case for Service

A watch that has survived seventy or eighty years usually did so because someone, at some point, took it apart and put it back together correctly. Regular service, roughly every five to eight years for a watch in active use, is what keeps a vintage movement running for another eighty rather than grinding itself down on old, thickened oil. It is not a cosmetic indulgence β€” it is the maintenance that lets a genuinely old machine keep doing the one thing it was built to do.
