Modern diamond cutting is an optimization problem: maximize brilliance, fire, and scintillation for a given rough stone, verified against light-return models and graded on a standardized scale. Antique cutting was a different discipline entirely, shaped by hand tools, candlelight, and rough stones that were often cut to preserve carat weight rather than to chase a mathematically ideal proportion. The result is a family of historic cutting styles that look, perform, and photograph differently from a modern round brilliant — and that difference is one of the most useful diagnostic tools a buyer has for dating and authenticating old jewelry.
Why Antique Cuts Look the Way They Do
Every cutting style in this guide predates electric lighting, or was developed while it was still a novelty, and that constraint drove the geometry. A stone destined for a candlelit drawing room or a gaslit ballroom needed to gather and return whatever weak, flickering light was available, which favored broad, shallow facets over the steep, precisely angled facets that make a modern brilliant sparkle under a jeweler’s fluorescent case light. The Rose Cut
The rose cut is the oldest cutting style still commonly encountered in antique jewelry, appearing as early as the sixteenth century and remaining in production well into the Victorian era, particularly for smaller accent stones. A rose cut has a flat, unfaceted base and a domed crown covered in triangular facets — typically in multiples of six, ranging from a simple three-facet rose to elaborate versions with twenty-four facets or more — that meet at a point at the top.
Because it has no pavilion beneath the girdle, a rose cut is shallow by design, which made it ideal for the foil-backed, closed settings common in Georgian and early Victorian jewelry: the foil behind the flat base did the work of returning light and adding color that the stone’s own geometry could not generate. Rose cuts read as soft, glinting light rather than fire, and they photograph almost flat compared to a modern stone. Small rose cuts are still cut today for period-style reproduction jewelry, so size and setting context matter for dating — a large rose cut in a hand-fabricated Georgian mount is a very different object from a tiny rose cut accent in a piece of any era.
The Old Mine Cut
The old mine cut, sometimes called the “cushion” cut in casual usage though the two terms are not perfectly interchangeable, dominated diamond jewelry from roughly the mid-eighteenth century through the late nineteenth. It has a squarish or cushion-shaped outline with rounded corners, a high crown, a small table, a deep pavilion, and — critically — a large, flat culet at the bottom that is often visible to the naked eye as a small window when the stone is viewed face-up.
That deep pavilion and small table are the cut’s defining trade-off: it produces less of the white light return and rainbow fire that a modern brilliant is engineered for, and instead throws broad, warm flashes when it catches the light, with dark, shadowy areas moving across the stone as it tilts. Collectors describe this look affectionately as having more “character” than modern cuts, and it performs particularly well under warm, low light — which is, again, exactly the lighting it was designed for.
An old mine cut diamond does not try to outshine the room. It waits for the room to catch it.
The Old European Cut
As gas and early electric lighting became more common toward the end of the nineteenth century, cutters began refining the old mine cut into a rounder, more symmetrical style now called the old European cut. It kept the high crown, small table, and open culet of its predecessor but adopted a genuinely circular outline rather than the squarish cushion shape, anticipating the modern round brilliant that would eventually replace it. Old European cuts were the standard diamond shape through the Edwardian period and well into the Art Deco years, only fully giving way to the modern round brilliant — with its mathematically standardized proportions — by the middle of the twentieth century.
Distinguishing an old European cut from a modern brilliant under casual inspection comes down to a short checklist:
- A noticeably smaller table (the flat top facet) relative to the stone’s overall diameter
- A visible culet — a small flat facet or point at the very bottom, often seen as a tiny circle when looking through the table
- Fewer, larger facets overall, giving a less finely broken-up sparkle pattern
- A softer, warmer light return with less blue-white fire than a modern ideal-cut stone
- Slight asymmetry between facets when examined closely, evidence of hand finishing
The Transitional Cut
Between the two world wars, cutters produced what is now called the transitional cut — a genuine bridge between the old European cut and the modern round brilliant. Transitional cuts have a larger table and smaller culet than an old European cut, moving proportions closer to modern ideals while still retaining some old-cut character in the crown height and facet pattern. Finding a transitional cut in a piece is a strong indicator of an Art Deco or immediate postwar date, and the cut is prized by collectors who want a stone with more brilliance than an old mine cut but still visibly historic proportions.
Step Cuts, Table Cuts, and Colored Stone Traditions
Diamonds are not the whole story. The table cut — a simple rectangular or square stone with a large flat top and few surrounding facets — is one of the earliest faceted styles, appearing in Renaissance and early Georgian jewelry, especially for colored stones set in closed, foiled mounts. The step cut, or emerald cut in its rectangular modern form, evolved from the table cut and became especially associated with the Art Deco period, where its clean rectilinear lines suited the movement’s architectural sensibility. Step-cut colored stones — calibré-cut sapphires and emeralds precision-shaped to fit geometric settings — are one of the clearest fingerprints of 1920s and 1930s work.

A modern round brilliant is cut according to standardized angle and proportion formulas developed across the twentieth century specifically to maximize the return of white light and the separation of that light into spectral fire, evaluated and graded against a fixed ideal. An old mine or old European cut was never held to that standard; its proportions reflect the rough crystal it was cut from, the tools and lighting available to the cutter, and an aesthetic sensibility that valued a softer, more atmospheric sparkle over maximum brightness.
In practice, this means an antique-cut diamond often reads as slightly darker or greyer face-up under bright, even, modern lighting than a modern brilliant of the same clarity and color grade — a fact that occasionally surprises buyers who assume any diamond should look equally bright regardless of era. Under warmer, dimmer, more directional lighting, the relationship often reverses, with the antique cut’s broad, flashing facets producing a richer, more dramatic effect than a modern stone’s more evenly distributed sparkle. Because of this, an antique-cut stone should ideally be evaluated in lighting conditions similar to where it will actually be worn, rather than exclusively under a jeweler’s bright overhead case lighting, which tends to flatter modern cuts disproportionately.
This performance difference also affects how antique-cut diamonds are graded and valued on the modern market. What Cut Tells You — and What It Doesn’t
An antique cutting style is strong supporting evidence for an antique piece, but it is not proof on its own. Antique-cut stones are routinely removed from damaged mountings and reset into new work, both by restorers preserving history and, less charitably, by sellers hoping an old stone will lend false credibility to a modern setting. A genuinely antique piece should show consistency: an old mine cut stone belongs with hand-fabricated prongs or a closed, foiled setting appropriate to its era, not floating in a mounting with laser-drilled precision and machine-stamped findings. When the cut and the construction tell the same story, you can trust the date. When they disagree, trust your eyes over the stone.
